Wintergreen Ski Season Opens Friday Dec 10

The 2010-2011 ski season opens on Friday, December 10 and conditions are excellent.   The Resort’s snowmaking crew has been working around the clock to open as much terrain as possible, including the strong possibility that The Highlands will open this weekend. Check the slope report for the most up to date information.

  A few reminders

  • New this year is Shamokin Ice, the family friendly ice skating rink you’ve all been asking for!  Shamokin Ice will open December 18.
  • Kids programs start December 11 and run daily through the season.
  • A winter wonderland is on tap for the coming holiday.  The slopes will be open, tubing in full swing, and Shamokin Ice ready for action.

25 Million Gallons Pumped into Snowmaking

The great news just keeps coming – check out the latest update below from the snowmaking gurus at Wintergreen.

=====================
Wow! The combination of impressive cold for early December and plenty of water in Lake Monocan has allowed us to pump just under 25 million gallons of water so far!

For the first time ever, we are making snow on a three sections of our mountain. If all goes well, we should be skiing Eagles Swoop, both Cross Trails, all of Dobie, Potato Patch, Upper Cliffhanger, Hydraulic and Lower Wild Turkey this Friday. Our recent investment in new snow guns is paying off big this year. This will be the first time ever that we have been able to open Highlands opening weekend.

Your favorite type of Wintergreen real estate has gone from ‘brown’ to ‘white’ in a hurry with cold air entrenched in the region and even some natural snow falling today. More natural snow is expected tonight, and snowmaking continues around the clock. We should see an on-time opening for the ski slopes on December 10!

Cold Air and Snowmaking Return to Wintergreen

After a bunch of rain (water we will be using to make snow!), cold air has returned to Wintergreen – mountain-top temperature is sitting at 32 degrees and falling this morning. The forecast is for “Snowmaking” with temperatures for the next seven days expected to be in the low twenties at night and in the mid thirties during the day. Yes, it is possible to make snow when temperatures are above freezing as long a dew points cooperate. We’ll be shredding, skiing, and tubing before you know it.
